Dr. Weatherspoon has chosen to take his expertise in childhood development to a different level by focusing a great deal of attention and effort into producing learning materials for children which is a slight diversion from the medical field. He loves children, and his heart has been pressed upon to produce alternative learning materials that will enrich lives of children well beyond the scope of what he has been able to do in his private practice of medicine.
Dr. Weatherspoon’s long-term goal is to create products of lasting value while incorporating a unique style of learning – which can enhance the lives or our youth. He has chosen to combine his passions for pediatrics and his talents for music, art, language, and film to accomplish this task. A review of his educational background, personal influences, and talents will lead to a better understanding of the question: Who is Dr. Spoon?
The eldest of three children, Dr. Weatherspoon was born and reared in Michigan where he attended Henry Ford High School, graduating at the age of sixteen. During his freshman year in college at the University of Detroit he majored in engineering but subsequently transferred to Wayne State University in his second year to pursue his undergraduate degree where he received his BA in Biology. He took Spanish courses in college at Wayne State and has always been interested in other languages and cultures. He commenced in 1983.
Dr. Weatherspoon enrolled at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing for medical school where he completed his medical studies in 1987. His interest in becoming a pediatrician came about during his first year of medical school. After visiting the newborn nursery floor and receiving post-graduate instruction by Dr. Marshall Klaus, who is well known for his studies with maternal and infant bonding, Dr Weatherspoon learned how early after birth newborns generate a preference for the human voice, face, and physical contact.
Dr. Weatherspoon completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, commencing in 1990. There he encountered many different and often rare, childhood diseases, as well as the common everyday illnesses. His favorite rotation was the “Continuity Clinic” which operated much like a private practice where each resident established their own panel of patients with guidance from faculty. One of his greatest joys as an intern was seeing his patients' begin walking, talking, and growing - ultimately developing with personality. His experiences at the Continuity Clinic and with Dr. Klaus during post-graduate instruction ultimately influenced him to choose general pediatrics as his specialty.
Dr. Weatherspoon enjoys traveling as well as experiencing different cultures. Additionally, he has always held close his passion for music and creative arts; he combines all of his pediatric medical training, education, musical training and his life experiences with his love for kids and his passion to create products that help parents raise children who are healthy, happy, and well rounded.
Dr.Spoon has appeared in the local media on television and radio. He seeks mostly to change lives by helping parents raise happy, healthy, well-rounded children.
